A Species Unlike Any Other
It is estimated that there are over 500 general varieties of macramé owl, with evolutions and mutations occurring all the time. Here are just a few of the varieties that we have come across.
These are no ordinary owls… these are Macramé Owls.

Albino Macramé Owl
Physical description
White with orange or red eyes.
Personality and disposition
While they adore sunshine, they are extremely sensitive to light and thrive better out of direct sunlight.
Locality
We currently have one Albino macramé owl at our sanctuary, Rosemary. We are expecting a baby Albino named Betty to join us soon. She is coming to us all the way from Florida.

Brush-tailed Macramé Owl
Physical description
As the name would suggest, has a tail with the appearance of (or can be used as) a brush.
Personality and disposition
Largely unknown. Thought to be rather shy and retreating, but has occasional bouts of wild and unpredictable behaviour.
Locality
One was spotted near a plant pot this summer, but her whereabouts is currently unknown.

Classicus Macramé Owl
Physical description
Basic features, similar to the Typicus variety, but with some additional distinctive features.

Elegansh Macramé Owl
Physical description
One of the prettiest, most distinguished and rare varieties of macramé owl, it sports soft, full plumage and a bushy tail. It is quite sizeable and averages 450cm from head to tail.
Personality and disposition
Quiet, cultured, well-mannered and polite.
Locality
We currently have one Elegansh macramé owl at our sanctuary, named Lawrence. We are expecting to bring in a female for breeding purposes. Lavinia is due to arrive at the sanctuary this autumn.

Typicus Macramé Owl
Physical description
Basic features, single colour, plain eyes.
Personality and disposition
Down to earth, modest, hard working, altruistic, loyal.
Locality
Found the world over. Thought to be the original variety from which all varieties have evolved. One of our sanctuary’s best success stories is our very own Typicus variety, Sherman.

Macaw Macramé Owl
Physical description
The Macaw macramé owl has a long body with several bright colours.
Personality and disposition
Quirky, expressive, active and mischievous.
Locality
Of southern hemisphere origin. We currently have one Macaw macramé owl at our sanctuary, named Skippy. If you read Skippy’s sad story on our Macramé Owl Diaries page, you will discover that unfortunately his plumage is not quite as brilliant as it should be for such a macramé owl in a healthy state.

Miniature Long-tailed Spectacled Macramé Owl
Physical description
Natural colours, with distinctive eyes (as if wearing spectacles) and a tail that exceeds body length.
Personality and disposition
Quiet, unobtrusive, keen powers of observation.
Locality
Curtis was rescued and now lives at our sanctuary.

Pink Pygmy Macramé Owl
Physical description
Basic features, under 15cm head to tail.

Plushkin Macramé Owl
Physical description
Very soft. Solid colour. Piercing eyes.
Personality and disposition
Gentle, basic needs. Happy to mind your own business.
Locality
Found worldwide. We have 2 young Plushkins, Betty and Barney.

Pot Bellied Macramé Owl
Physical description
Solid colour, dull expression, with a round, full body.
Personality and disposition
Fun-loving party-goer, but can be at times overindulgent, with a tendency toward addictive behaviour.
Locality
Found the world over, our very own Pot Bellied macramé owl is named Mike.

Scrawny Tawny Macramé Owl
Physical description
Basic features, but unusually slight build.
Personality and disposition
Nervous, anxious, yet thrives on fear. A bit like an adrenaline junkie.
Locality
Discovered in odd places. Horace lives at our sanctuary.

South American Gold Flecked Pygmy Macramé Owl
Physical description
Dark body, under 10cm head to tail, with golden flecks.
Personality and disposition
Flamboyant, creative, has ‘attitude’.
Locality
Fernando regularly visits our sanctuary office.

Whimsical Macramé Owl
Physical description
Unusual and comical looking, sometimes has unnatural colouring. Identified by the telltale head tassels.
Personality and disposition
The Whimsical macramé owl has been rumoured to possess healing powers through the medium of laughter. Its charming sense of humour is said to enliven hearts and perpetuate speedy recovery in humans.
Locality
We are fortunate enough to have two Whimsical macramé owls at our sanctuary, Alfonso and Madeleine.

Yorkshire Puddingdale Macramé Owl
Physical description
Generally round, fluffy and jovial.
Personality and disposition
Gregarious, playful, and enjoys a good laugh.
Locality
Although rare, we are pleased to say we have a female Yorkshire Puddingdale at our sanctuary. Her name is Priscilla.
